How to read the list

Three things to look for.

Every bottle on our list carries three cues: the grape, which tells you the style; the region, which tells you where it grew and often how ripe or restrained it will be; and a pairing, our suggestion for the dish it flatters. Tell us your preferred sweetness and spice and we will guide you from there.

The grapes

A grape guide.

The dozen grape varieties that make up most of our list, and the dishes they were made for.

White

Sauvignon Blanc

Crisp, aromatic and high in acidity, with notes of citrus, cut grass and green apple. Our most food-friendly white, and the natural partner for lake fish.

The world's most planted white grape, ranging from lean and mineral to rich and buttery when oak-aged. Rounder than Sauvignon Blanc.
